After a day of bbq we settled on this nice Mexican place that evidently has a few locations. They have solid margaritas and a selections of smaller tacos. I got the chili, not really knowing what to expect from a Mexican joint but it was pretty solid. Decent value for the size and it was the hottest chili I’ve rated so far. I actually asked our server about it and she said it was a little hotter than normal today. So I guess that means they do something more than open a big can from corporate and heat it up. Not sure what purpose the radish garnish is for so I ditched them. Taste was solid, great spices and thickness. It was more on that chili powder side of taste than tomato but I really liked it. Definitely recommend.

11-20-19 Rippy’s Nashville TN

Stopped in to listen to some music and realized it was dinner time and happened to see chili on the old menu. $3 for a cup and it was very well worth it. They had some bbq on the menu and I definitely got a little smoky flavor, which was great. There was a great ratio of meat to beans and a ton of flavor. There was a smidge of heat and maybe could have had a little less cheese but I don’t know if there is anything else I would have changed.

Looking back I would put this in my top 5. If you find yourself on Broadway and making your way up and down the strip, stop into Rippy’s for some music and bowl of chili!

11-20-19 Martin’s BBQ Nashville TN

Had a little road trip so one of the first stops was Martin’s BBQ, which is pretty well known. I really had high expectations being they have solid meats. I think they are more focused on the bbq and getting people through the doors than the chili…. the “cup” wasn’t more than a shot glass, so the value was terrible, and honestly there wasn’t much flavor to speak of. I had a tiny bit of meat which looked like remnants of something that was scrap meat. Wish I could expand on the spices/flavors but it was lacking. If you do happen to go there stick to the ribs or pulled pork and skip the chili.

11-16-19 Potbelly Maple Grove MN

Been a while since I’ve been to a Potbelly and get a chili there. I thought from before they asked if you want cheese but nothing at this place. I also recall the chili tasting different from before (and better). Maybe corporate changed the “recipe”…meaning whatever mass produced shipment that gets shipped out to all locations.

It did pass the eye test…good color, mix of meat and beans and a few peppers in there. Aroma was pretty good too. For being a national company I’d put it up against any other chain restaurant. It could have had a touch more flavor and been a little warmer, temp-wise. I did notice just a smidge of heat and it did have a varying flavor profile depending on the bite. If you had a few peppers you mainly tasted that…some more bean flavor so try to mix it up good. We got bowl which was basically a large cup. For the value stick with the cup… overall not too shabby. It is a good side for the sandwich and sure I’ll get again.

11-13-19 Yankee Tavern Eagan MN

Driven by this place a few times but never stopped in until today. Quaint little place. Been a while since I did a white chicken chili so I was looking forward to it. The just had one size and this was it. Not sure why this is the second consecutive one with raw tomatoes as a garnish….

I wasn’t sure if it would be broth based but it was. I noticed there was a ample amount of beans when I looked and not a lot of chicken. After stirring around and having a few bites that was confirmed. Would have been nice to have more chicken along with some tomatillos or jalapeños or something else. The flavor was there! Nice tang of citrus and spices and there was definitely a little kick of heat. I don’t know if adding any sour cream or cheese was really needed. Always a good sign that nothing else was needed. I would surely get again!

9-4-19 hash browns Hen House Minneapolis

Not my first trip here and won’t be the last. It is a nice little breakfast place. When I first looked I thought they might have been baked but that would be pretty crazy. I guess I was looking for that crispy crust you get from the flattop. I was kind of in the middle for this one. Flavor was nice, inside was pretty good but had an overall consistency like the inside…if that makes sense. There just wasn’t the crispy outside I like. Sure I’ll get again and see if things change….

11-2-19 Pittsburgh Blue Edina MN

I came into this with high hopes based on a recommendation. I mean, a “ higher end” steakhouse should result in a top notch cup of chili? Correct?

First off, a bag of Fritos? I’d bet that must people just take the bag home…

This might be the first chili I’ve got that came with a big glob of raw diced tomatoes…which threw me for a loop. I thought about scraping them off but figured I’d give it a try…which was a mistake. It just doesn’t mix with the nice hot chili then little bites of cool tomato. The chili itself was pretty solid. It did have a little heat which was nice and decent flavor. There could have been some nicer chunks of meat and the cup a little bigger. Overall it was pretty solid but I would recommend getting rid of the tomato!
