2-19-22 Charlie’s on Prior Prior Lake MN

This one was a real eye opener. Been to this place before when it was a different name and I can’t remember seeing this chili before so maybe it is new. Labeled as ”grandma’s chili”. Of course this was my app before my breakfast…

I guess I will just say that it was ”italian flavored chili”?? If I remember the menu it said made with italian sausage so it was very unique. I think everything else was pretty standard as far as I know…Tomato, onion, beans, chili seasoning, etc. This actually brought some nice heat too, which was nice. I personally liked it very much and will get again. Guest at my table tried it and wasn’t a fan. I guess if you are a chili purist then maybe not your cup of tea but give it a try and you just might like it.

1-6-22 The Brooklyn (Edinburgh golf course) Brooklyn Park MN

I will have to go and check my records but pretty sure I’ve rated this before. Either way it was really good. I had the sandwich and soup combo and didn’t leave hungry. The chili had nice chunks of tomato, meat and I swear they were pearl onions (not too many), which has to be a first and something I am definitely going to try at home. They would pop in your mouth like a little cherry tomato and give you little flavor bursts. Overall just really solid flavor, good hints of chili powder and tomato (which I love) and meaty flavor. I would highly recommend when you are there!

1-1-22 Snuffy’s Malt Shop Edina MN

First time at Snuffy’s but I have heard of them for a while as they have a few locations and been around forever. I was pretty excited to have a good ole cheeseburger, fries and some chili so I came in hungry. Burger and fries really delivered! Chili…not so much. It is kind of like they took yesterday’s vat and just reheated it because it has that thick, mushy consistency. Nothing was really distinguishable in there. It was also kind of bland but there were a little hints of some flavor in there. Maybe a fresh batch would be much different? I guess I would try again if I was there.

Overall Flavor – 3.8/10

Value – 9/10 $3.75 for cup and I had bowl for $5.75 which was a lot!

12-22-21 Sons of Norway Fargo ND

First time eating here at the Sons of Norway. All in all it was great food at a reasonable price so I would recommend going there. I was surprised to see they had chili as I was expecting some type of lutefisk soup…lol.

it was very reminiscent of my grandma’s chili, which is high praise. Good chunks of meat, veg and a solid sauce. It had a little kick to it, which was nice and a solid mix of tomato, chili pepper and other spices.

12-11-21 Town Hall Station Edina MN

First time here and it came recommended. I guess it is a brewery of sorts as I believe they mostly sell their own beer, and have a small number of other micros. If you want a good ole Coors Light you aren’t going to find it here.

I got the hot chicken sandwich which was solid and started out with the chili. Not sure if they just have the bowl as I didn’t get an option for cup and it came as you see with some cheese and a drizzle of sour cream.

first off this could have been heated up more. It was boarder cool enough to send back for 30 secs in the microwave. So first impressions could have been better but the superb taste quickly squashed that. There were nice big chunks of beef and tomato, a little green pepper and not too much bean. The heat level wasn’t there at all but it just had a nice flavor so pretty solid. Very good tomato base. If it came out hot and have some more heat this could have been even better. I would highly recommend.

11-26-21 Peppers Fargo ND

Been to Peppers a number of time and had the chili before but it has been a while. I was kind of expecting a bland, mushy, average cup of chili and this exceeded those expectations. It did come with cheese and sour cream on the side and really didn’t need it.

Just a good solid cup or you can get a bowl for a meal. It was more on the tomato side of flavor town with notes of chili powder. Usually there are bigger chunks of tomato in it but I had a few smaller ones along with some onion and celery and maybe there were some tiny peppers. Good amount of meat and little more bean count than I’d like. It was piping hot temp wise and could have been a little spicier. If you are looking for a good side instead of fries then get this. Or, just the bowl for a meal and you won’t be disappointed.

11-24-21 Bar Down West Fargo ND

first time visiting Bar Down so I was looking forward to a burger and some chili and a few beers. I’ll say I was pleasantly surprised on the chili as it was pretty unique. I wanted to ask my waitress what was sprinkled on top but forgot. It was like a cojita cheese or something like that. As you can there were some raw jalapeños (with seeds) and boy did that ratchet up the heat. There were a few other veggies in the cup but now too much, onion, tomato, pepper. Good ratio of everything…meat, bean, veg. The flavor was really nice, after my mouth cooled down. If you are looking for a really good, not your “run of the mill” cup of chili (or bowl), head over to Bar Down. Safe to say, this is one of the tops I’ve had in the Fargo metro area.

Overall Flavor 8.2/10

Spice Level 7/10

Heat Level 9/10 (eat the jalapeños)

11-14-21 Naomi’s Home White Chicken Chili Plymouth MN

I don’t get too many chances to review a white chicken chili so I was anxious to try this. I don’t think there is too much to alter with white chicken chili so what did Naomi do to her special recipe? I think it was pretty classic being broth based with some cream cheese added to give it a more velvety texture. She used “roaster chicken” which gave it better flavor. There was a nice mix of spices that gave it a rich, deep baseline. Then there was the acid of the lime and green chiles that really complimented it nicely. Overall this is the best white chicken chili I’ve had! Good heat, awesome flavor, nice chunks of chicken, white and dark beams with a little corn. After my initial tasting I did add some cheese and a little salsa verde then mix in some tortilla chips. Looking forward to having this again soon!

Katy’s Home Cooking Plymouth MN

Another home entry from highly acclaimed, Chef Katie from North Dakota. She brought a whole lotta ingredients so I was anxious to see and taste the final product. I did start with a small helping of her turkey chili (not pictured) and I’d say I couldn’t tell it was turkey instead of ground beef so if you looking for something healthier this is a great options.

For her ground beef chili (pictured) there was a nice mix of vegetables among the hearty supply of meet. I typically don’t add jalapeños but after tasting hers I thing I’ll be adding in the future. There was also some nice bell peppers and not a lot of beans, which was great. There was a nice tomato base and a “secret blend” of spices that weren’t labeled but I’m assuming chili powder and paprika were there. It was a really solid chili and something I would eat again, just need to amp up the spices and heat a little, but that depends on who else is eating and how much they can tolerate…lol

Overall Taste 6.7/10

Spice level 6/10

Heat level 2.8/10

Round 2 from chef Judy as she was confident in this new and improved batch. It was highly touted from other patrons. It did bring all the necessary requirements I like, good tomato flavor, heat, consistency, meat ratio and solid blend of spices. She had a nice mix of chili powder, paprika and there was a good amount of heat.
