10-29-21 Cowboy Jack’s Fargo ND

First time at Jack’s in Fargo but was expecting the same from other locations.

This was a “spoon stands up in the bowl” consistency. Very thick so if you planning on scooping some with a chip it would surely break, or if you dunked some bread it would come up dry. I don’t mind it when it isn’t as runny as long as the flavor is there. For the most part it tasted pretty good. It was a little “mushy” so hard to discern all the ingredients. If you are looking a for a heart side besides fries I’d recommend getting.

Overall Flavor 6/10

Spice level 5/10

Heat level 5/10

IT Factor 8/10 – just based on thickness…

Value 4/10

8-13-21 Holiday Inn Fargo ND

I’ve stayed at the Holiday Inn here many many times and haven’t got around to eating much during my stay so of course I’m gonna try it.

I could tell at first glance this was some mass produced corporate chili. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
what can I say other than it was average. It had kind of ok flavor but really lacked any spice, tomato notes, heat…etc.

overall flavor 4/10

spice level 2/10

heat level 2/10

IT factor 2/10

value ?? I didn’t pay so I guess it was really good!

if you are looking for a side other than fries it isn’t that bad. If I get again I would ask for cheese, sour cream and maybe some type of hot sauce to kick it up

Well….after a long hiatus due to COVID and not being out to eat much…and the fact that hardly anyone has chili in the summer I finally have another post. Yes, I have been here before but it is good to be back.

this cup “bowl” of chili was pretty solid and different from what I remember. I thought before it came with cheese, sour cream, onion and maybe tortilla chips so I was surprised when it just came “plain”. But, I was happy to just have good old chili and nothing else.

I detected a tiny bit of smokiness, some good tomato notes and good overall flavor. There wasn’t much heat at all but the taste was solid.

Overall taste – 7.1/10

Spice level – 5.8/10

Heat level – 1/10

IT factor – 6/10

Value – 5/10 – $6 I believe but it was a good amount…I’m guessing all prices have gone up since COVID

10/8/20 Senser’s Bloomington MN

I couldn’t remember if I had done this before…but I don’t think I have. The white chicken chili seems to be an every day menu item, so it must be a favorite. I believe it was about $5.49 for a cup, which is a hair steep so I got it as my side with my buffalo chicken sandwich.

Hmmmm….what can I say other than it was just pretty solid all the way around. The gravy was the right consistency, good chunks of chicken and the right amount of veg, flavor and spices. I couldn’t detect the “green chiles” which these usually have but there was more of a savory taste like a nutmeg present. Not sure if a little sprinkle of cheese and sour cream would have enhanced it? Bottom line is that is was just fine on its own. These was a hint of heat and maybe next time I’ll just get a bowl (which hopefully comes with some nice bread to dunk in it.

overall taste – 8.2/10

spice level – 7.9/10

heat level – 4.2/10

IT factor – 7/10

value – 4.1/10 (think it should be closer to $4 per cup)

definitely give it a try if you are at one of the Senser’s locations

This one was a head scratcher…. mainly know for their long list of great burgers I just assumed one would be some type of burger with chili, so hence they would have a side of chili, and I was correct. I was asked if I wanted chili (which it comes with) and sour cream, so I said yes to both. It only came with cheese and no sour cream. When I looked at it I thought that this was pretty thick and pretty much all at the table said something that was similar. Now, I try not to embellish too much but I think you could have stood up a golf club in this small bowl it was so thick, like cement. It was completely void of any moisture or liquid. So I thought maybe they left it on the burner all night and it just reduced down…or maybe this is normal and it is easiest to put on a cheeseburger without running all over…or someone forgot to add any stock to it? It was such a ball of matter that it was tough to tell what was actually in it. Surprisingly though there was some decent flavor… I guess I’ll have to try again if I’m ever back to see if this is the “norm”

overall taste – 6/10

spice level – 3.8/10

heat level – 3/10

IT factor – 9/10 (simply cuz I’ve never had any this thick)

value – 8/10 (2.99 ain’t too shabby)

Well, it was nice to be at a restaurant during Covid…and see chili on the menu. I got it as my side with my “club wrap” (which was good).

I think the cup was only 2.99 which is a good price. They asked what I wanted on it and opted for cheese and onions. I did see it was in a big kettle so it wasn’t microwaved to order. Seemed pretty hearty and thick and had a nice dark red color. There were a lot of beans and a few chunks of tomato…and not much meat. Some of the beans were a little too soft. I thought it might be “vegetarian” if I were to guess. Taste wise it was pretty solid but still had that overall bean flavor. There were notes of tomato and chili powder and there was a smidge of heat. So you can probably guess that this could have used way more meat and a little more spice, or onion in the sauce.

Overall taste – 6.2/10

Spice level – 5.9/10

Heat level – 4.8/10

IT factor – 6/10 (if you like beans)

7-14-20 Oak Ridge Danbury, WI

This was my second time here for breakfast and luckily the chef was open to heating up some chili for me. I had the green chili last time as well but figured i would just do the red again. The claim it is a “hamburger in a bowl” maybe based on how much meat there is. It is a nice sized portion and yes, there is a lot of meat. There are some good sized chucks of veg too and the gravy is a little more on the soupy side but overall it is pretty hearty. It definitely isn’t your tomato based sauce that I like but it had a little hint of chili flavor to pull it together. It didn’t come with any cheese or sour cream, which I didn’t miss but curious what it would taste like mixed in.
I think this could be elevated more with some more spices…paprika, ancho, chipotle, etc.

Overall taste – 6.8/10

Spice Level – 4.5/10

Heat Level – 4/10

IT Factor – 7/10

I would recommend getting this. Great value, comes hot and lots of meat.

5-16-20 The Piggy West Fargo ND

finally got to sit down in a restaurant finally amid this Covid crisis…

This is a new place in the Fargo area which is the second now, the other in Minn.

I was chomping at the bit to get some good BBQ and chili at the same time. I was a tad underwhelmed thought. The chili came out first and it was a good sized portion and served hot. It came with a tiny bit of cheese and sour cream to add, which I didn’t. It had a thicker sauce which made it hard to see what was actually in the spoon, except the dark beans. I didn’t see a lot of the brisket that it was supposed to have. It just seemed to be sauce and beans with a little brisket and tomato. It was hard to pick up and spices at all and there was just barely a hint of smoke. That being said it was pretty bland. The basics were there with a hearty sauce, just needed less beans, more meat, and a ton more spices…chili powder, paprika, etc.

It was expensive too at $9.00….

Overall taste – 3/10

Spice level – 1/10

Heat level – 1/10

IT Factor – 3/10 – liked the mug it came in

3-10-20 Famous Dave’s Maple Grove MN

I purposely didn’t look at my old Famous D’s Review from a different location so I have an unbiased review. I got it as my side with my 2 meat combo and don’t think there was an up charge…which is nice. It was ok sized but for me could have been a hair bigger and the temp could have been a little hotter so the cheese was melty.

Nice chunks of meat which looked like a beef/brisket. Really good flavor and some good heat. It had a nice tomato note but also a solid chili flavor and hint of smoke. All in all a very solid cup from a chain restaurant and really any restaurant for that matter.

Overall taste – 8.1
