Second time eating here. Believe it is a converted high-end steakhouse and that is now a little more casual. I got the chili as a side to my sandwich. First thing I noticed was that it was the consistency of a chili dog chili…real tiny pieces of meat. There wasn’t much else in this mix so very unique. Flavor-wise is was lacking. It wasn’t void of taste but just could have been amped up a lot. There wasn’t much heat or any particular spice saying “hey look at me”.

I guess I’d maybe get again if there weren’t any good soups to choose from.

9-18-19 Ike’s Bloomington MN

Ike’s has a few places in town here and usually has good food. I’ve probably ate at the airport one the most because they had Miller Lite but it is gone now.

You can see from the pic the big chunk of meat, although it was like all of the meat in it. There was some more traditional ground beef as well. It just has a nice rich, deep, velvety sauce. The first thing I noticed was a tinge of cinnamon…or at least that is what hit me. The beans were a mix of light and dark and not much veg. All in all a very unique but classic chili that I’d eat again and again. On the side was a little ramekin of sour cream, cheese and onion to add if you like.

Only the second time I’ve been here for lunch. Pretty standard restaurant cup size. Asked if I wanted cheese and onions. Got a breadstick with it as well which was nice.

Overall it was pretty solid. Traditional in the sense of sauce, meat, veg. Had the tomato backbone I like wit some good spices. There wasn’t much for heat but it made up for it with really good flavor. I think next time maybe a bowl!

9-8-19 CJ’s Fargo ND

Great little breakfast/lunch place in south Fargo. Not open for dinner and I’ve only had breakfast there. I haven’t seen chili on their menu yet outside of their “Italian” chili and something that was all beans from what I take. I tried the Italian before and it was very Italian.

This chili was great and it did have a little hint of something Italian like oregano or almost like a pasta sauce. For me I really liked this. Good amount of meat, veg and nice consistency. Of course the cup could have been a little bigger but definitely would get again….maybe the bowl.

The Hash Browns were solid. This place is always busy and quality has always been great. Sometimes you’ll get those slabs of browns that are piled high and the middle is either not hot or mushy. This slab was nice and thinner so crispy on top and bottom with a buttery, soft inside.

Ladies and gentlemen I give you easily a top 3 if not the best chili out there (Revival…Manny’s).

Yes I made this and it is pretty much my same recipe I usually do, although I never measure anything. Give credit to my wife for the incredible homemade croutons. First off, my chili has a tomato base, usually ground beef but I’ll throw in some pork from time to time. Tomato sauce, paste, some type of crushed/dice tomato, chicken or beef stock, onion and garlic, a can of beans then a lot of chili powder, smoked paprika, ancho chili powder, smoked cayenne, chipotle pepper, little cumin and from time to time some other spices I’ll try from random shopping trips.

I’d say I go for a smoky note but until I actually smoke the meat used in it I won’t get to where I want to go. Overall I think mine is pretty solid.

9-2-19 Wahlburgers Mall of America

First time at Wahlburgers… went to try a cheeseburger and saw they have chili so why the heck… FYI the “double cheeseburger” was average at best. It sure why fast casual type places even ask how you want the burger done because both of our “medium” burgers came well done…

The chili was thick, like you can stand your spoon up in it. They ask if you want cheese or sour cream. I chose cheese. It was a nice hearty bowl (no cups), lots of big hunks of meat, not much else except a random tomato, pepper or bean. I’d say this was more on the non tomato flavor side but had a nice little flavor profile. It was mainly chili powder and not too much else from what I reckon. The chili was more like a main course so next time if I get it I’d cut out the fries.

….or I could do without and see if they can redeem themselves with a better burger

8-31-19 Chili’s Plymouth MN

As you can tell I tried to remove all of the tortilla strips… ugh… maybe on the menu places can say chili comes with this crap. I’m fine with cheese on top and sour cream on side but I think any type of tortilla/frito/cracker should be on the side as well. Pretty sure I’ve eaten at Chili’s in my lifetime a solid 20+ times easily and I have to say this might be the first cup of chili…which is pretty crazy. I have to say I was pretty impressed. It was heavy meat/sauce and not much to say for beans/veg. It had a pretty thick consistency and I thought it could have been a little less. Really good overall flavor, mix of spices and just a smidge of heat. It could have been a tad hotter but for a chain restaurant I get they have to appeal to the masses. Cup could have been a little bigger but this was pretty hearty and filling. Definitely would get again.

8-23-19 Keys Woodbury MN

Had a double dip here of chili and breakfast which is a favorite combo of mine. Pretty sure this is the same Key’s chain from this region so I was a little surprised that the chili was a little different and not as good as the downtown location. It was still good but not as great. It was a hair more bland but still worthy of a repeat. On the other hand I have to say the hash browns lacked some pizzazz. I know pretty much every restaurant table has salt and pepper but it would be nice to see some browns come out with a little S&P. There was a decent crisp to the outside but the inside was a little too dry. It really could have been more moist and buttery.

8-4-19 Lone Oak Eagan, MN

Been a while since I’ve are here so I couldn’t remember what the chili was like. This place likes to put out there smoked meats a little but it isn’t a BBQ place. For some reason I was expecting more of a smoky brisket type meat in here but I wasn’t at all disappointed with the ground beef…at least that’s what I thought it was. First off I would have asked for no Fritos….Maybe a tad more cheese and a little sour cream on the side. All in all this was pretty darn solid. It has a nice deep, rich flavor. It had a little hint of smoke but also a nice mix of pepper notes like ancho and paprika. It also had that nice tomato base I like. The size was very good for a cup and a decent value. I would definitely get again.
