10-5-22 The Lowbrow Minneapolis MN

I actually ended up here by mistake but was pleasantly surprised. Place was busy and lucky to get a little table. Note the Americana burger is super good.

So why am I not an fan of corn in my chili? Not sure if it the little sweetness you get or the color…either way, just doesn’t work for me.

This came out piping hot. Cheese was baked on to the rim so when you poke the spoon in the chili pours over the side…which sucks.

I noticed right away this had a little kick to it. Was described as ”Bison” chili….not sure if i could tell the difference as there weren’t too many big hunks of meat. Overall this was pretty solid I have to say and not a bad deal for $5.

Overall Flavor – 6.6/10

Spice level – 5/10

Heat level – 6/10

IT Factor – 5/10 – homemade tortilla chips

Value – 7/10 – hard to get a good cup for $5 these days

5-20-22 Town Hall Brewery 7 Corners

First time here…although back in my college days I’m sure I was in this building before. As far as I know they just have a bowl of chili…no cups.

This was just a really solid bowl of chili. It had everything I like – great meat, bean, sauce and veg. It had that nice understated tomato base sauce, more meat to bean ratio, little visuals of peppers and just a small dollop of sour cream. Taste was really…no complaints at all. The bowl isn’t quite big enough to qualify as a meal so I had the sausage platter to go with it. I would highly recommend getting the chili if you stop in.

Overall flavor – 6.8-10

Spice level – 5.9/10

Heat level – 2/10

IT factor – 4/10

Value – 3/10 – $8 for bowl

5-6-22 Wolfy’s Butcher Shop Hudson WI (take home)

This was outstanding!! Picked it up frozen and thawed out in the fridge overnight. If I had a separate frozen ranking it would for sure be number one.

That being said, it might vie for a spot in the overall rankings.

This had it all…smokey meat, great sauce, heat, deep flavors. There wasn’t a lot of fillers, just meat, little bean and veg all tons of taste.

If you are ever in Hudson, stop in and pick some up. They do make sandwiches and stuff so maybe they do serve it fresh too.

Overall Flavor – 9.2/10

Spice level – 9/10

Heat level – 9/10

IT Factor – 8/10

Value – 8/10 ($14 for a good sized jug…maybe get at least 2 or more bowls out of it)

5-3-22 BLVD Tavern South St Paul MN

I really don’t know if what I ate falls into the category of chili. It was literally a couple huge meatball sized hunks beef and a ton of cheese and onions. There was a little watery sauce and no real chili flavor or spices. There was corn in it as well and I will never like corn in my chili.

Not much else to comment on other than I will probably not get this again. The cuban sandwich was decent.

Overall flavor – 1.7/10

Spice level – 1/10

Heat level – 1/10

IT factor – 7/10 (if you like meatballs)

Value -2/10

4-30-22 Post American Eatery Hudson WI

First time at this converted post office in Hudson. Note – the tuna salad sandwich was pretty solid.

Chili was right on the menu so not a seasonal add from what I can tell. First off it came in what looked like a big thimble so I was thinking there should be more. It was also a thousand degrees so guessing it was microwaved to order.

My initial thought was this is italian all the way, like a marinara base. I didn’t get much chili flavor at all, or any other real flavors. It has a decent mix of meat, veg and beans…but that was about it. It would have been a lot better if there was some garlic bread to dip into it. Next time add some chili powder and paprika.

Overall flavor – 4/10

Spice level – 1/10

Heat level – 2/10

IT factor – 3/10

Value – 2/10 $5.95 for a small cup

4-19-22 Market BBQ Minneapolis MN

Been a long time since I have been back here…. It is always good to see chili in the appetizer section, which is pretty rare. No cups…just one size and it comes with pre packed cheese, sour cream and onion.

As you can see from the pic there are nice large chunks of meat and tomato. There weren’t too many beans and the sauce had a nice consistency. The flavor was really nice, just a good blend of chili, tomato, sweet and smooth. I was expecting a little more smokiness being this is a bbq joint. If that were the case I think this could have been really good. It could have had a tad more heat too but overall pretty solid. The bbq took a back seat to the chili in this place.

Overall flavor – 8/10

Spice level – 7/10

Heat level – 3/10

IT Factor – 3/10

Value – 2/10 ($10 for bowl) plus a supply chain fee on our tab??

4-15-22 MC Tap House Brooklyn Park MN

first time at MC Tap House. It was a busy Friday of course. Service was great and food came out quickly. Note – the bus boy was awesome…

Friend recommended the chili and it didn’t disappoint. It had some nice kick to it and was more of that classic chili taste for those of you who don’t like much tomato flavor. There were nice hunks of meat and if I had to venture a guess, it was a mix of hamburger and a beef like you would get in a french dip. I would certainly recommend getting it. It had a nice spice blend, little heat and came out nice and hot, with a mini corn muffin.

Overall Flavor – 8.1/10

Spice Level – 7/10

Heat Level – 6/10

IT Factor – 5/10 (nothing flashy except the corn muffin)

Value – 3/10 ($6 for a cup is a little steep)

3-17-22 Historic Brewing Flagstaff AZ

First time here as we stayed close by traveling thru town. Surprised to see chili on the menu as most places in AZ don’t seem to make it. I will start by saying the beer was ok and burgers were solid…but the chili was bizarre. It was the most salty chili I have had, to the point I should have asked if the chef spilled a jar of salt in it, and probably one of the hottest chilis I have had…so a weird combo. Just when I thought I couldn’t try another bite I would take another. it was like a salty taco meat in a way. Maybe I would try again just to see if the saltiness was a mistake.

Overall Flavor – 3.8/10

Spice level – 9.8/10 (all salt)

Heat level – 9.5/10

IT Factor – 9/10 (bizarre)

Value – 4/10

3-2-22 Park Tavern St Louis Park MN

I typically don’t do 2 pics but thought it was necessary to show the bounty of hearty chunks of meat and veg. Park Tavern is a Minneapolis staple for bowling and the bar so the parking lot is usually full. They have the classic bar food, sandwiches, pizza, etc., so glad there was chili on the menu. At first glance I thought it was my grandma’s recipe, which is a good sign.

I was a big fan of the rustic big chunks of meat, tomato, onion, etc. It is pretty much a sign that it is homemade and not out of a big can. The sauce was a hair thin so the meat and veg were the stars. It was very solid but could have been top notch by a little tomato paste in the sauce to thicken it up and add some depth of flavor. I would certainly order again.

Overall Flavor – 7.8/10

Spice Level – 6/10

Heat Level – 5/10

IT Factor – 8/10

Value – 5/10 ($5.50 for cup)

2-27-22 Wild Bill’s Blaine MN

Been here a few time but mostly to have a few drinks. Quite the fancy vessel for the chili to come in! I guess it was cool looking but could have held more chili. The chili as I have posted for a few in the past was reminiscent of the chili you get on a chili dog, very small pieces of hamburger with very little else. it was serviceable for an appetizer but nothing special. They could kick it up a notch to make it better….add some onion, tomato, garlic, spices, etc.

Overall Flavor – 5/10

Spice Level – 3/10

Heat Level – 3/10

IT Factor – 6/10 (just because of the cup)

Value – 2/10 (no price on menu…not even on menu so assume it was spendy)
